Renew Our Rivers began in 2000 as a community river cleanup organized by Alabama Power employees from Plant Gadsden concerned about litter found along the Coosa River. Founded by Gene Phifer, the program is now one of the nation’s largest river cleanups including river systems across Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Florida.
For each cleanup, Alabama Power works with local community partners, volunteers and organizations. Since its inception, more than 110,000 volunteers have removed some 15 million pounds of trash from waterways across the Southeast. In 2017 alone, more than 4,700 volunteers removed more than 295,000 pounds of trash and debris from Alabama waterways.
